Let’s look into the Garnier brand’s current animal testing policy and cruelty-free status in 2021.
Is Garnier Cruelty-Free?
Is Garnier a cruelty-free brand? NO! Garnier as a brand is dedicated to sustainable sourcing and natural ingredients, however, it is owned by L’oreal and L’oreal is on the PETA list for animal testing which does not make Garnier a 100% cruelty free brand.
Is Garnier Sold in China?
Are Garnier products sold in China? NO! Garnier products are no longer sold in China. L’oreal decided to stop operations of their brand, Garnier in China in 2014. This also means that Garnier is not required by law to allow animal testing as China is one of the major countries which still continues testing cosmetics on animals.
However, L’oreal has other brands like Maybelline and L’oreal Paris which are sold in China and hence adhere to the Chinese law of having their products tested on animals.
Is Garnier Vegan?
Can Garnier be considered a Vegan brand? NO! Garnier as a brand cannot be considered 100% Vegan.
Although Granier claims to have a vegan formula demonstrated by their unique back-labeling approach, decoding the origin of every ingredient mentioned in the ingredient’s list; Vegan does not mean only having ingredients that are plant based and not derived from animals and dairy.
Being vegan also has an ethical belief where animals should not be harmed and because Garnier is owned by a company that has sales in China where animal testing is mandatory; Garnier cannot be considered a Vegan brand.
What is Garnier’s Animal Testing Policy?
As per their UK website, Garnier’s Animal testing policy states that:
Garnier’s products are not subject to any animal testing, anywhere in the world.
L’Oréal does not test any of its products on animals and has been at the forefront of alternative methods for over 30 years.
This statement however is not truly accurate because L’oreal has its other brands marketed and sold in China and they pay for animal testing which is required by law to get a product passed for the Chinese market. So they may be on the search for alternative methods but the company also has given to unethical practices in the form of animal testing for growth and sales in certain countries.
Is Garnier Owned by a Parent Company?
YES! Garnier is owned by L’oreal and the parent company is on PETA’s list for animal testing.
What Does Garnier Sell?
Garnier sells skin care, hair care & styling products for men and women at an affordable price. The brand focuses on bringing about an environmental impact by using biodegradable packaging and product formulas.
What is Garnier’s Current Cruelty-Free Position?
Although Garnier as a brand is pushing towards Green Beauty; its parent company does not match the ideals which makes Garnier currently NOT a cruelty free brand.
I Use Garnier Products. What Can I Do to Help?
The marketing campaigns of being Vegan can be misleading so you should let Garnier know by writing to them that you love the product and the change they are trying to bring with the sustainable steps and processes in place but 100% honesty always goes a long way to build the trust with a brand.
